摘 要 在傳達上，圖像資訊具有快速的優點而文字資訊則具有精確的特點。雖然已有許多人因的研究指出英文及數字顯示設計的原則，然而，由於中文的結構及複雜度與英文及數字不同，因此這些設計原則並不能直接應用在中文字的顯示設計上。 本論文的目的在探討中文顯示最適宜的字體及最佳的尺寸值，論文包括三項實驗。實驗一探討中文最常用的200字，以明體、楷體及隸書等三種字體顯示時的最小可視認尺寸。共有120位大學生參與實驗。文字以個人電腦的螢幕呈現，採由小漸大的方式顯示，直到受測者可以視認該字為止。變異數分析的結果顯示字體與筆畫數兩者均是影響中文視認閾的關鍵因素。明體的視認
度優於楷體，而楷體的視認度又優於隸書。以筆畫數預測視認度的迴歸分析顯示，每增加一筆畫則需增加約0.26弧分的尺寸以維持一定的視認度。 實驗二以目前中文電腦系統內建的5401字為對象，算出各字以最常用的四種字體：明體、楷體、隸書及黑體顯示時的8項描述值。以因素分析的方法歸納出三個關鍵因子 (筆畫數、字高及字寬) ，作為實驗設計的基礎。這三個因子可解釋這四種字體各描述值92.24%的變異量。根據分析結果進行一個四因子 (4x2x2x2) 的實驗，以字體、筆畫數，字高及字寬為自變項，探討各變項對中文視認度的影響。為避免熟悉度影響視認結果及確保受測者能夠認識該字，實驗用字取自中文最
常用的500字。共有16位受測者參與視認實驗，文字以個人電腦的螢幕呈現，採由小漸大的方式顯示，直到受測者可以視認該字為止。實驗結果顯示，字體、筆畫數、字高及字寬等四因子的主要效果均達顯著的水準。一般而言，筆畫數少、字高或字寬描述值大的字其視認度優於筆畫數多、低字高或窄字寬的字。 實驗三為英文字的視認度實驗。實驗材料除了選用10個英文大小寫字母外，並從國中英文課本第一冊中選出含有2, 3, 4及5個字母的英文單字各10字，以常用的Times New Roman (Times) 及Italic等兩種字體呈現進行實驗。實驗的受測者、設備、程序及方法與實驗二相同。實驗的結果顯示，就
單獨的字母而言，其字高與字寬對視認度的影響與中文字相同。總體而言，Times字體的視認度優於Italic，大寫字的視認度優於小寫字，字母數對視認度沒有影響。此外，本研究也發現英文的視認度優於中文。本研究的結果可應用在用電腦呈現中英文資訊時，選擇適當字體、文字尺寸、字高及字寬時之參考。
